The purpose of this session is to provide educators with an overview of the science of reading from a practical perspective. To begin, we will define the science of reading and discuss the processes involved in learning to read as well as identifying practices not aligned with the science of reading—the unscience. Next, we will apply the science of reading by delving into phonemic awareness instruction and demystifying the English language with seven decoding patterns: five for single-syllable words and two for multi-syllable words. We will conclude with a focus on how to evaluate programs using vetted rubrics/templates and how to structure lessons by emphasizing multi-sensory dictation practice and the transfer of skills to connected texts. This training will be held on October 20, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the ROE #3 Professional Development Center. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The cost to attend this training is $50/person and lunch will be provided. Each participant will receive 5.5 PD hours upon completion of the training.
