The purpose of this session is to provide educators with an overview of dyslexia and relevant instructional strategies. To start, we will explore what dyslexia is from the perspective of the brain and how it affects students learning to read. Then, we will bust counter-productive myths and explore efficacious pedagogical practices such as the teaching of phonemic awareness, the alphabetic principle, decoding, and fluency. In addition, we will discuss best practices for screening and identifying students with dyslexia as well as review free resources. We will finish by focusing on how to structure lessons through multi-sensory practice and skill transfer to connected texts.
